Designer and paper artist Peter Dahmen, born in 1967, studied communication design at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund, Germany. Since his student time, he has been passionately designing three-dimensional folding objects made of paper and cardboard. His foldable paper artworks became very popular on the internet – with millions of viewers on his YouTube, Facebook and Pinterest pages. Since then, he has received commissions from companies worldwide.

As an independent designer, he creates prototypes for pop-up sculptures in all conceivable sizes and for the most diverse purposes. What inspires him to this day is the enormous range of his commissions. Many of his designs are produced in large editions, but he also designs exclusive one-off pieces. For example, he constructed a gigantic folding backdrop more than 34 foot wide and 16 foot high for a press conference of a German car manufacturer at the “International Motor Show 2011” in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. His large-format paper pop-up sculptures for the Israeli company Highcon were among the most filmed and photographed objects at the trade show DRUPA 2016. Some of his exclusive pop-up card designs became bestsellers at the MoMA Store in New York.

In his artistic works, he likes to focus on the process of transformation. Some of his works create the illusion of movement only through the interaction of light and shadow and by changing the viewer's angle of vision. It is impossible to grasp these objects in their entirety at a single glance. Only by changing the angle of view – that is, only by moving the viewer – can the colorfulness of the paper sculptures gradually be fully grasped.

Some works from this art series served as inspiration for the development of the FACT product series “FLOW Collection”.

FLOW

The concept behind FLOW was to create a grid that restricts the viewer’s gaze by dropping cuboids of felt from each tile in such a way that only a partial aspect of the colored background’s surface is visible. Viewing the ceiling from different angles changes the perceived colorfulness. It is impossible to grasp the objects in their entirety at a single glance. Only by changing the angle of view can the colorfulness of the tiles gradually be fully grasped. As soon as the viewer moves, the impression is created that the tiles are changing or transforming. FLOW was designed to create an interaction between the person and their environment.

FLOW requirements

FLOW is developed using a series of 7 colors as seen in the image to the right. A minimum of 5 tiles are required to create the effect while moving under the installation.

We have partnered with kvadrat with the following collections: Divina 3, Divina Melange 3 and Divina MD to help create the ideal color palette for your project. The beauty of this product is that you can select any 7 colors to create a unique ceiling. Optimal ceiling heights for FLOW is between 9’-0” - 10’-0”. Video was produced using a 9’-0” ceiling.

If your project requires a different layout or ceiling heights, please let us know and we will consult with the designer, Peter Dahmen, to help create a custom FLOW for your project.
